Safe from carbon monoxide
Sometimes old or poorly maintained gas boilers can release carbon monoxide. This is a very dangerous, potentially fatal gas. According to the NHS, around 50 people die every year, in England and Wales from carbon monoxide poisoning. And it’s faulty heating appliances- including boilers which are responsible for this!
Carbon monoxide poisoning is often known as the silent killer- because with no taste, smell, or visibility, it can be difficult to detect. This is why we strongly urge you to install a carbon monoxide detector. This is fairly easy to do and they can be purchased cheaply from most DIY stores. You should also help keep yourself safe by knowing some indicators of its presence. These include:
- Your boiler flame burning yellow or orange. A healthy boiler flame should be blue.
- Wood or coal fires keep burning out and struggling to say ignited. Also if you find fires are generally becoming a struggle to light.
- Sooty stains on or around gas appliances.
- A blocked flue or chimney
Even with a detector though, you should still have an annual boiler check. This will allow your engineer to detect and fix all types of boiler problems. An annual boiler check should provide reassurance that your household is safe and energy efficient.
What should I do if I suspect my boiler is unsafe?
If you suspect that your boiler is unsafe, you should seek professional assistance immediately.
You should also seek medical assistance if you suspect you are suffering symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning- we’ve already told you how dangerous this gas could be! Symptoms can be difficult to identify because they can overlap with a lot of common illnesses. However, if the symptoms lessen when you leave the house, and there is no other obvious cause for them you should have them checked out.
So make sure you know the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. Typically they include:
Headaches, dizziness, collapsing or losing consciousness and nausea. If other people, or even your animals are experiencing the same symptoms, this is another strong indicator of the gas’ presence.
If you suspect if presence, you should try keep yourself by:
- Turning off all gas appliances, and switching the gas off at the meter.
- Putting out any naked flames
- Leaving your house and seeking fresh air immediately.
- Contacting for professional assistance as soon as you can
Safe from financial burdens:
Although, obviously not as important as your household’s safety, annual boiler services can also keep you safe from big, unexpected costs.
By having a service your engineer should be able to detect and fix any actual or potential problems, before they become a big issue. Annual services will reduce the chances of future problems. Plus any that arise should be easily resolvable.
Also, not having annual boiler services can violate any insurance and warranty.
