Things to consider before buying a new boiler

Before you go ahead and pull the trigger on buying a brand new boiler, ask yourself a quick question. Are you really getting the most out of what you already have. New boilers can be costly, so here’s a few things to keep in mind before you buy a new one…

Does your boiler really need to be replaced?

It’s always a good idea to ask yourself why you think you need a new boiler. If it is because your current one has stopped working then you have the perfect reason, but if you boiler is still working it’s important to really assess if a new one is needed.

For example, if you are finding that your home isn’t staying warm or that certain parts on your home are being warm correctly and other are not then it is not necessary your boiler that needs to be replaced. It could be that a powerflush could help your system get back to optimum working order or that you may need to invest in insulation. If you home has problems keeping the heat in that it generates, then no boiler in the world can make that better. Insulation should be seen as an important investment the same as a new boiler and in most cases pays for itself over the course of many years, while you feel it’s effects straight away.

Do you use your boiler’s timer?

You might be surprised by the amount of people that leave their heating on all day for when they return home. Not only does this cost you more money over time but there is a solution around that sort of usage already built into your boiler. Making use of your boiler’s timer means that you can control when your heating starts to heat up your home, meaning that you only feel the heat when it really matters.

What works best differs from person to person, but in general it is also a good idea to set your timer to fire up your boiler 30 mins before you wake up in the morning and around 30 mins before you go to bed. Another popular option that people use in the winter is to set their heating to turn on around 30 mins before they arrive home from work so that their home is nice and toasty for when they get back. This way, you are not wasting heat at times when you are not around to enjoy the real benefit.

Have you look around for better energy bill options?

This is something that is easy to overlook but can save you money in the long run. If you feel like you are paying too much on your bills due to your boiler, some of time this is due to aging buying failing to stay efficient. However, it might be that you are not on the best plan for your home’s needs.

It’s always a good idea to use a comparison site online to see if you could be making savings before you go out and get a boiler as this may not actually reduce your bills which is a big reason for doing so for many people.
